Lift station site proves controversial

Tuesday, June 24th, 2008

Source: Chicago Daily Herald (Original Article)

A sewage station being put in place alongside the Menards development in Long Grove has raised the ire of area residents.

The lift station is proposed for a spot on Checker Road on Lake County property.

It became a necessity when the Menards home improvement center developers starting putting in sewer lines for the store at Lake-Cook Road and Old Route 53. The village wanted the nearby Country Club Estates neighborhood to have the ability to connect to the sewer line if that ever became necessary.

“We looked at a number of different locations,” Village Manager David Lothspeich said during a board meeting Tuesday.

However, residents are not happy that the station is planned near a pond, citing concerns about the ecosystem. And traffic safety concerns over a blind spot in the road by the proposed station were brought up Tuesday by dozens of homeowners who attended the meeting.

A truck would visit the station site at least three times a week, and residents said that poses a danger for people coming around the curve when the truck pulls out.

A bike accident occurred in the area recently, they said. However, that was farther west on the road, before the S-curve that residents cited.

Other concerns include leaks and the odor.

However, engineers for the village said Lake County has, on average, one leak per year, and that’s only on main lines and not on lift stations.

The village will be putting up fencing to screen neighbors from the station itself.

Residents said there are other spots that are better for the station, which is about 6 feet high. They expressed their concern that the village is pushing too quickly for a spot on Checker Road when other areas are more viable.

The village agreed to try to set up a meeting with its engineers, Lake County, the Menards developers and residents to find a compromise.

“There are issues at each Frequent Flyer Card site,” Village President Maria Rodriguez said. …continue reading

A newbie's adventures with public transport

Source: Sacramento Bee (Original Article)

Good Lord, time to shove off. Can’t miss my morning commuter bus. A slice of toast and a gulp of coffee and I’m out the door, hoofing it from my Carmichael home to the nearest bus stop, which is in Fair Oaks.

Bus stop? Public transit? Yup, my editor had thrown me under the bus. My assignment: Take Regional Transit to work and write about it. Ohhhkay.

Never mind the special relationship I have with my pickup truck or that I’d never ridden an RT bus and had boarded light rail a grand total of once. The thinking was that my initial inexperience and ignorance would be shared by others who might be considering commute alternatives to offset soaring gas prices and a sour economy.

So, striking out for bus stop No. 104 on Winding Way, I arrived after a brisk 10-minute walk, incinerating about 50 calories along the way. The bus stop, one of 3,674 in Sacramento County, was marked by a sign mounted on a weathered post, its paint peeling like a bad sunburn.

Four minutes passed and second-guessing ensued. Would a bus actually appear? Had I interpreted the hieroglyphic bus schedule characters correctly on www.sacrt.com?

In the distance, the bus materialized but didn’t seem to be slowing. Alarmed, I tried the “Hey, I need a ride” wave. My bus, one of those compressed- natural-gas-burning behemoths, pulled over and shuddered to a halt.

The bus driver pegged me as a newbie right away when I blurted out: “Does this bus get me downtown?” and “Do I pay for the entire trip now?”

She nodded, looked annoyed and commanded me to insert $2.25 “in the slots.” Then, she gassed the bus into traffic. The monster heaved and pitched as I staggered to a seat.

My RT bus was remarkably clean and loud, and the seats didn’t exactly shout La-Z-Boy comfort. Only one other passenger was aboard, so seat selection wasn’t a problem.

During the ride to the Watt/ I-80 light-rail station, more commuters boarded until the Frequent Flyer Card belly of the beast was nearly …continue reading

Mid-Ohio: AIM Grand Am Race Preview

This weekend’s race at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course marks the end of the first half of the season in the Rolex Sports Car Series presented by Crown Royal Cask No. 16 and with successive top-ten results, AIM Autosport is feeling like it is time to break through to the podium. Also sitting in the top ten in points, it would be a big boost for the drivers and the crew to enter the second half of the fourteen race season on a high note.

Following a promising start in the Six Hours of The Glen two weeks ago, the Exchange Traded Gold No. 61 Ford Riley would cross the line in seventh place and elevate the team to eighth overall in the series championship.

As much as Boston University center Colin Wilson awed scouts with his bench pressing prowess at the NHL scouting combine, it will be the intangibles that will weigh heaviest in his favor at Friday’s NHL draft.

Detroit Red Wings assistant general manager Jim Nill says Wilson projects to one day be an NHL captain.

“Leadership qualities are written all over him,” adds Atlanta Thrashers general manager Don Waddell. “He’s going to get his points but not going to tear it up. But he’s going to be just as good at both ends of the ice.”

Wilson could go as early as No. 8 to the Phoenix Coyotes, who already have a strong collection of young talent led by Kyle Turris and Peter Mueller.

“Faceoffs, shot blocking, in traffic at the net, Wilson thrives in all those areas,” says Jim Johannson, assistant executive director of USA Hockey. “He can play as a checker against a top player or center an offensive line.”

Scouts seem to view Wilson, son of former NHL player Carey Wilson, as a No. 2 center.

“But he’s a No. 2 center who will outplay the other team’s No. 1 in the playoffs,” says Johannson.

BOGOSIAN: Defenseman could be a top-three pick this weekend

Defenseman Zach Bogosian and Wilson will be the first two Americans off the draft board, but others have a chance to go early. Some of them:

•Defenseman Jake Gardiner, Minnetonka (Minn.) High. Recruited by the University of Wisconsin, Gardiner is considered one of the top skaters in the draft.

•Defenseman John Carlson, Indiana Ice: He’s 6-2, 210, and he’s expected to go in the bottom of the first round. “He’s big, powerful, and he’s got great buffy the vampire slayer dvd hands,” says Charlie Skjodt, Ice president …continue reading

Organic produce? Free-range eggs? Cheap is the new chic

There are hordes of Aldi virgins in the grocery aisles these days.

On Saturdays, the Ballwin store’s parking lot is packed. A checker recently told me she was unable to leave her register for four hours because of the long lines.

Discount stores in various parts of the country are reporting significant increases in customer traffic. And it’s partly because the economic downturn has us reclaiming that old-fashioned notion that saving money is a virtue.

Cheap is the new chic.

Aldi, a German grocery chain, is known for its rock-bottom prices and limited selection. In these bleak economic times, more shoppers can appreciate generic eggs for $1.29 a dozen and may pass on the $3.99 cage-free eggs.

But the store has its own secret codes, and the newbies are easily spotted. They look slightly dazed by their surroundings, unsure of how to navigate a store that seems completely out of touch with our penchant for an overabundance of choices and tempting displays of imported cheese and store-made salsa.

The grocery shopping experience has become more of an expression of a "lifestyle" than simply a way to buy milk and detergent. So there’s a fair amount of culture shock for those who have never ventured into the world of one-brand, one-size-fits-all groceries.

I made my first trip to Aldi nearly a decade ago. At first, it seemed a little seedy. A friend had to show me the ropes: Slip a quarter into the locked shopping cart rack; scrounge for empty boxes to carry the food; pay a dime to use a large, heavyweight plastic grocery bag; discover that credit cards are not accepted.

Much of the food is processed. There are no organic veggies, fruits, milk or free-range poultry. Boxed foods, like cereal and mac and cheese, are stacked in the cartons in which they were shipped.
