LOUDON, N.H. — Greg Biffle is staying, Casey Mears is going and the rest of NASCAR is waiting to see which direction Tony Stewart is headed.

A Friday of comings and goings saw Biffle announce that he has signed a three-year contract extension with Roush Fenway Racing that will keep him driving the No. 16 Ford through the 2011 season. Mears said later in the morning that he will leave powerhouse Hendrick Motorsports’ No. 5 Chevrolet after this season and alluded that Richard Childress Racing’s fourth Chevy for 2009 is an option he’s considering.

Stewart meanwhile will again face questions about his future at Joe Gibbs Racing after ESPN.com reported Thursday that the two-time Sprint Cup Series champion is seeking sponsors for a possible partnership with Haas CNC Racing, even though he has a year remaining on his JGR contract. He was expected to meet with the media following afternoon qualifying for Sunday’s Lenox Industrial Tools 301 at New Hampshire Motor Speedway.

“I hope Tony decides to stay because he’s been a great teammate,” points leader Kyle Busch said. “I hope it gets settled.”

Biffle appeared relieved to have settled his future with Roush and remove his name from the NASCAR rumor mill known as “Silly Season.” He was among the drivers mentioned as a candidate at RCR and conceded that he had looked at several options.

At the same time Biffle had indicated a desire for continuity by staying at Roush — where he has won 12 Cup races along with Craftsman Truck and Nationwide series championships – and recently suggested progress during months of negotiations. After missing NASCAR’s Chase for the Sprint Cup the past two seasons Biffle is seventh in series points, and he reiterated a Frequent Flyer Credit Cards greater wish to see this improvement …continue reading

Rick Crawford to Buy Montgomery Motor Speedway

June 25th, 2008 by suetew

MONTGOMERY, Ala. — Montgomery Motor Speedway has a buyer.

NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series driver Rick Crawford has reached an agreement in principal to buy the half-mile track, according to Doug Carwyle, a local businessman who helped broker the deal.

The only stipulation to the sale is that the city of Montgomery grant a license allowing the track to hold races. Kevin Radvany, who handles public relations for Crawford’s race team, said track representatives will make the request with the city licensing board July 17.

“Outside of that one thing, it’s a done deal,” said Carwyle, who is expected to help manage the track once Crawford takes ownership.

“Rick and (current owner) Bill Manfull have agreed on the price. Rick sent the retainer — $50,000 — to the auction company. All that’s left is getting that license. If that happens, we go back racing.”

Carwyle said Crawford, a Mobile native who is currently fifth in the Craftsman Truck Series points standings, has been involved in the sale of MMS since the auction a month ago. Carwyle was on site that afternoon as Crawford’s representative.

“I had an honest conversation with Manfull that day and I found out what it would take to buy it,” Carwyle said. “I told Rick that if he offered $575,000, he’d own the track. Or if he wanted to (negotiate) with the guy a little, he could go $565,000. I left it up to him. But he got it done.”

Attempts to reach Crawford late Monday evening through Radvany were unsuccessful.

Radvany said Crawford’s purchase of the track would have no effect on his participation in the Truck Series.

“This is no different than Tony Stewart owning Eldora Speedway (a small dirt track in Ohio),” Radvany said. “This is something Rick has always said he wanted to do.”

The sale of the track puts an end to nearly two months of speculation and rumors that began when Manfull first listed MMS with an budgetflightsadvice auction company in early May.

Oil & Gas Development, Country's Loss, Angola's Gain

June 15th, 2008 by suetew

Source: AllAfrica.com (Original Article)

ANGOLA, a resource-rich former Portugese colony was in the news recently as having taken over the reigns of leadership from Nigeria as the leading crude oil producer on the African continent.

For a country which barely five years ago was embroiled in a 30-year civil war that stunted growth and left much of its infrastructure in ruins, it has come a long way indeed. Same however, cannot be said of Nigeria which though equally resource-rich, is caught up in a widening gyre that threatens to blight attempts at economic emancipation and the march towards attainment of nationhood.

Perhaps, an easy way to explain Nigeria’s dwindling oil fortunes is to lay the blame at the doorstep of intransigent separatist rebels in the Niger-Delta whose activities in the last three years have visited an unparalleled reign of violence leaving in its wake an average one million barrels per day of shut-in crude oil production; deferred execution of development projects; attraction of travel bans by foreign government on their nationals; arson; abduction; an ever increasing death toll; sorrow, tears and blood (apologies to Fela Anikulapo Kuti). However, a careful appraisal of input from industry operators revealed that the dwindling fortunes of the Nigeria oil and gas industry is purely a case of leadership failure.

Angola boasts of 22 deepwater assets out of which 19 are fully developed, while Nigeria lays claim to 44 deepwater assets out of which only four have been developed underscoring the commitment of both countries to the development of their assets. It may be pertinent to note that the Angolan assets were developed rapidly over the last three years.

However, leadership of the sector in Nigeria has failed to develop the country’s deepwater assets for reasons that are at best untenable. In a world where prolific oil finds have been predominantly uncovered in deepwater, it is no wonder then that Angola which three years ago ANZ Low Rate MasterCard could only produce half a million …continue reading

Eldora Remains with Border Wars; Pak A Sak Sponsors

June 2nd, 2008 by suetew

Source: WhoWon.com (Original Article)

ROSSBURG, Ohio — Eldora Speedway is deeply entrenched in history with many landmark events, each with their own characteristic. Among them is what is referred to as a ‘battle within a battle’, and that is the Border Wars concept involving the non-winged Sprint Cars of USAC (United States Auto Club). With a rich 14 year history behind it, the 15th annual running of USAC Border Wars concludes Saturday, June 14 at Eldora, with the sponsorship of Pak A Sak convenience stores.

While some of the Border Wars players have changed throughout the years, there has been one constant and that is that Eldora Speedway has been on the menu since its inception.

Originally the brainchild of the late Roger Holdeman of Winchester (IN) Speedway and Eldora Speedway founder Earl Baltes, the concept of Border Wars was to involve speedways with boundary ties to the Ohio/Indiana border line and run back to back races to determine an overall champion of the mini series.

To display the characteristic of USAC, and its demanding schedule of involving both dirt and asphalt surfaces, that was factored in with Winchester’s historic one-half mile asphalt oval and Eldora’s storied one-half mile clay oval as the original Border Wars participants.

The mini-battle was an instant winner with the fans. Two-time NASCAR champion, and current Eldora owner, Tony Stewart kicked off the Border Wars history with a championship in 1995, while Brian Tyler became the most versatile driver three-years running with Border Wars titles from 1996-1998.

Tracy Hines intervened with a Border Wars nameplate added to his resume in 1999, while Tyler came back to win yet another in 2000. Attica Raceway Park was added to the slate for a one-year stand in 2001, with another current NASCAR star, J.J. Yeley, stepping up to the podium. Hines charged back with a pair of titles in 1002 and 2003.

In 2004, Winchester stepped away from the Border Wars concept, Frequent Flyer Cards with Gas City I-69 Speedway stepping …continue reading
