Calling all comic book fans! Saturday is the seventh annual Free Comic Book Day at participating comic book stores across the nation, where comic books will be handed out to anyone who visits.

Never read a comic book? Then Saturday is your chance!

Titles being given away this year include Superman, Transformers, X-Men, Hellboy and even NASCAR comics, among several others. Comics for the young crowd include Archie, Sonic the Hedgehog, Tiny Titans and Disney titles. Not all stores will have all titles, and supplies are limited.

“Even if you have never picked up a comic book, stop into Bonanza Books & Comics, because you never know what you will end up finding,” said owner Jeff Allen. He believes the art of comics is still “alive and well” and is confident that Saturday will be a “big day in the comic world.”

Bonanza will celebrate Free Comic Book Day from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Ethen Beavers, an artist for Dark Horse who has worked on Indiana Jones and and “Star Wars” comics, will be stopping by to sign autographs.

Local artists Clay Atkins, Patrick Barr and Vince Underwood also will be on hand. And while they’ll be coming by car, not by Republic attack cruiser, “Star Wars” imperial troops from the Central California Garrison of the 501st Legion also are set to make an appearance.

For more information on Free Comic Book Day and to check out the list of participating publishers and their free comics, go to FreeComicBookDay.com.

DataCore's SANsymphony Storage Virtualization Brings …

Wednesday, April 30th, 2008

Source: SYS-CON Media (Original Article)

DataCore Software announced that Woodgrain
Millwork has purchased and deployed its flagship SANsymphony software from
DataCore authorized partner Right! Systems (RSI). RSI is a solution provider of
virtualization solutions.

“SANsymphony allowed us to add a new EMC
array and make it work effectively with our existing HP EVA storage, improving
and harnessing the combination to run in tandem and support our mix of database,
ERP and VMware server systems,” said Chip Olsen, senior systems engineer,
Woodgrain Millwork. “With SANsymphony now in place, we have been able to
significantly improve performance and address the uptime and availability issue
for our SQL servers and ERP application – something mission-critical to our
operations.”

Performance and the Three “R’s” –
Repurpose, Replication and Redundancy
Woodgrain was faced with a problem and
needed to fix it. The problem was that the company had all of its storage on an
EVA 5000 array, which was a little over three years old. Apart from knowing
they could get better performance from a newer system, the IT team at Woodgrain
was most interested in achieving data duplication. Woodgrain’s Unidata ERP
system runs on a single platform (HP 9000) and that was a potential point of
failure. The goal that the IT team had was to solve the issue of the EVA and
the HP 9000 becoming single points of failure. To overcome potential calamity,
they realized that the solution was to duplicate the data to a second array.

When the decision was made to duplicate the
data to a second SAN array, Woodgrain started talking to various vendors,
including HP, EMC and IBM. As Olsen and others dug into things, they realized
that they had more issues to deal with than they originally thought – some on
their side and some on the SAN side. On the Woodgrain side, with the Unidata
system it was going to be hard Student Credit Cards to quiesce the database and maintain …continue reading

The Golden Compass

Monday, April 28th, 2008

Source: Sydney Morning Herald (Original Article)

As the Harry Potter cinematic juggernaut heads towards closure,
other children’s series are vying to take up the slack. Based on
the Philip Pullman trilogy His Dark Materials, The Golden
Compass stars an orphaned girl with unusual powers who must go
through a series of trials, helped by supernatural forces.

Other film franchises echoed here include The Lord Of The
Rings and Star Wars and only show up The Golden
Compass’s weaknesses. Despite a cast of top British talent, it
lacks the magic, with a clunky script, odd lack credit card au of pace and Nicole
Kidman as a whispering fashion plate.

John Serba: Becoming an 'Indiana Jones' fanatic

Saturday, April 26th, 2008

Source: MLive.com (Original Article)

The “Indiana Jones” films left me with some of
the most vivid moviegoing memories of my childhood. I recall
my sister taking me to see “Raiders of the Lost
Ark” when I was an impressionable youngster, and it
still elicits a thrill every time I watch it.

That’s why the thought of a new Indy adventure makes me
giddy, even though Harrison Ford could qualify for Medicaid.
Here’s a personal chronology of the “Indiana
Jones” saga, in words and (ulp) pictures:

“Raiders of the Lost Ark” (1981)

Story: We’re introduced to archaeologist adventurer
Indiana Jones as he and feisty damsel Marion Ravenwood
(Karen Allen) race creepy Nazi goons to unearth the Ark of
the Covenant, said to contain the Ten Commandments.

Box office: $242 million (domestic, not adjusted for
inflation)

My fond recollection: I’m befuddled by the love story
and its witty repartee, but an indelible impression is left
by (a) the oodles of squirming snakes, (b) The Guy Who
Played Han Solo (”Star Wars”) wielding a bullwhip
and six-shooter and (c) the bad guys’ melting faces and
exploding eyeballs during the climax. Sweet!

Where I saw it: The brand-new Movies at North Kent Mall on
Plainfield Avenue NE, which closed in 1998 and now is (sigh)
a car dealership.

“Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom” (1984)

Box office: $180 million

Story: Indy, sidekick Short Round (Ke Huy Quan) and
squirrelly nightclub singer Willie Scott (Steven
Spielberg’s soon-to-be wife, Kate Capshaw) end up in
India, where our hero agrees to help impoverished villagers
recover their sacred Sankara stones from the Thuggee cult,
notorious for human sacrifices.

My fond recollection: Schoolyard mimicry involves removing
still-beating hearts with bare hands and eating chilled
monkey brains and eyeball soup. And isn’t that
(shudder) Willie lady annoying?

I saw it at: Studio 28, offering Grand Rapids’ pinnacle
of movie presentations at humongous facility with a …continue reading

Ex-Luers star returns after injury

Friday, April 25th, 2008

Source: Fort Wayne Journal Gazette (Original Article)

The first two weeks of tryouts and practices for the Nancy Rehm/Border Wars Classic is the first time a lot of players have touched a basketball in game-type competition in weeks, possibly months. For MarKee Martin, it has been more than a year.

The last time Martin played in an organized game was in the 2007 sectional finals, 14 months ago.

A preseason anterior cruciate ligament injury and surgery kept her out of high school games for the 2007-08 season, and the Saint Francis recruit has only recently been cleared to play.

Expect for some pickup games at the YMCA, Martin’s game has been pretty much stagnant and replaced by a lot of rehabilitation.

On Saturday in the annual all-star game against Ohio, it will be for real again.

“It is good to be back on the court for a little bit of organized basketball,” Martin said after practice Tuesday. “I am a little slower than usual trying to get back to my maximum speed, but I am taking it one day at a time.”

A three-year starter at point guard for Bishop Luers and a state champion and Junior All-Star, Martin was a good bet to be on the Indiana All-Star team that plays Kentucky each year. But after suffering an injury to her right knee in the 2007 sectional semifinals and dramatically coming back to play in the sectional-finals loss to Concordia a day later, Martin was sidetracked with an injury to the other knee the following preseason.

A Division I prospect heading into the season, Martin ended up at Saint Francis and is an all-star nonetheless, but the opponent will be Ohio, not Kentucky.

Martin had surgery to repair a torn ACL and meniscus in her left knee Dec. 14, which makes returning to the court pretty impressive.

“It has been a little tricky, and some things I have been able to do, it is like you can’t do that yet and you have to wait and try to get all that agility Citibank Credit Cards back,” Martin said. “Coming in and …continue reading

Africa’s Kids Are Born Poor to Die Poor.. Education Gives Them Hope

By Lisa Adams STUNNING, talented and rich, she’s a Grammy-winning pop star with the world at her feet. But Shakira’s heart lies a million miles away from the red- carpet glamour she enjoys today. She’s vowed to get back to her roots and help some of the poorest people on the planet. And today, her campaign to give all children a life-saving chance to go to school is coming to the Scottish Parliament. Shakira, who grew up in the drug-devastated South American country of Colombia, says vital funds are needed to help set up schools because 72 million children worldwide never have the chance to break free from poverty by learning. Shakira, 31, said: "I grew up in the developing world where children beg for an education and parents are desperate to provide it. "But a lack of opportunities and no education means people who are born poor will die poor. I know this is a challenge but this is also a historic opportunity for all of us. "We can be the first generation to bring education to all children everywhere so that no child is left behind."Sprearheading Shakira’s campaign at Holyrood is Abraham Conneh, who will today reveal to MSPs how youngsters in his home country of Liberia were forced to become child soldiers. More than half of Liberia’s population lost their homes in the civil war which ripped through the country on the west coast of Africa between 1989 and 2003. The kids who survived on the frontline during more than a decade of civil war today have a life expectancy of just 38. That’s a year younger than Abraham, who now works tirelessly for Oxfam, helping 12 schools across Liberia give a fresh generation of youngsters a fighting chance. The odds against them are high. To secure the fragile peace, 15,000 UN troops remain in the country, which has no running water, central electricity or road network. Linden pair accused of Lego scam

Wednesday, April 23rd, 2008

Source: The Flint Journal - MLive.com (Original Article)

LINDEN - A Linden pair is accused of using Legos to escape
their financial woes.

The pair allegedly switched $2,000 worth of price tags from
low-end Legos to high-end Legos at Target stores, then
resold them on eBay.

They are suspected of pulling the scam at numerous Target
stores, including locations in Fenton, Flint, Hartland
Township, Brighton and Westland.

How much can someone possibly make on Legos?

Well, Target’s Web site offers a Lego Star Wars
Millennium Falcon set for $499.

Most of the Lego sets range from about $20 to $50.

Police allege the Linden pair may have visited as many as
five Target stores in a single day and defrauded the chain
of upward of $6,700 statewide.

The pair were arrested Tuesday after a search of a home on
Franklin Street in Linden.

The man, 33, and the woman, 29, whose names were not
released pending arraignment, are expected to face felony
theft charges and possibly federal charges of mail and wire
fraud.

Police said the pair told investigators they were selling
the Legos because they needed the money.

During a search of the Linden home, police said they also
found items from other stores including Toys “R”
Us, Wal-Mart and Big Lots.

The man apparently has been in trouble before for switching
the price tags on Legos and G.I. Joe figures at a Meijer
store in Brighton.

The investigation was conducted by the Livingston County
Sheriff’s Department and the Tiger Airways multijurisdictional Fraud,
Identity Theft and Scam Team.

Witness: Spat over prior to shooting

Thursday, April 17th, 2008

OAKLAND — Meleia Willis-Starbuck was not in any physical danger and could have left the scene of an argument with a half-dozen Cal football players long before she was shot by a friend, one of the players testified Wednesday afternoon.
Instead, Gary Doxy said, Willis-Starbuck continued to jabber with a player and that player’s cousin until her friend Christopher Hollis appeared about a block away and fired a revolver at the crowd.
One of the shots hit Willis-Starbuck in the left breast, and passed through her lung and heart before resting near a right lower rib. She died in about five minutes.
Doxy, a football player for the University of California, Berkeley, who the prosecution said was grazed by one of the bullets, recounted the fateful evening during the second day of trial in Alameda County Superior Court. Hollis is charged with murder, assault with a firearm and being a felon in possession of a firearm.
Doxy said the verbal sparring between one football player, the player’s cousin and Willis-Starbuck had pretty much ended when he heard gun shots from behind him.
“(The player) was more or less saying, ‘Everything is going to be OK. I apologize. Why don’t you get into your car?’” Doxy said of the conversation between Willis-Starbuck and the football player. “They were just apologizing to her and trying to get her to get in the car with her friends.”
But then, Doxy said, he heard a gunshot, followed by another and then three or four Advertisementmore.
“I just heard the first gunshot, I kind of froze,” Doxy said. Then he said he heard Willis-Starbuck shout, “That’s my brother right there.”
“Then after that, I heard thesecond (shot), and I just took off running,” he said. “I just wanted to get out of the area.”
Once Doxy reached his dorm room, a friend noticed he was bleeding.
At that point, Doxy realized he had an injury on his wrist. Although he never sought professional medial treatment for the wound, St George Platinum Card the prosecution believes it was caused …continue reading
