Men’s collection for the spring/summer 2009 season turned Milan into a fashion Mecca from June 21 to 25. More than 40 designers will exhibit their collections.

Celebrity favourite, Versace, changed the look of formal clothing, showing jackets without double collars or lacking them altogether. Sleeves twisted up and silk scarves around the necks, as well as sports sunglasses with light coloured frames are a more leisurely variant of the three-piece suit of an urban business man. The materials used to make the creations were also innovative – techno taft, a type of nylon with a modified structure that looks like silk. Accessories (scarves, bags and sandals) were used to freshen up the shirts and trousers that were mostly in green, black and sand colour. Pop singer Janet Jackson and actor Rupert Everett could not resist the visual treat by Donatella Versace. See the PHOTO GALLERY.

Italian designer Roberto Cavalli, who is known for his tiger and flower prints, prepared a small voyage for the coming season. He decorated shirts and trousers with prints of his photographs had had taken in Africa and whose theme is a romantic sunset in Africa as seen through the branches of trees. His collection called “Bohemian Safari” also included the unavoidable floral and animal prints. His collection is dominated by strong colours with a bit of white, dark brown and blue. The silhouette is tight in the upper part of the body and then widens in the lower part, or vice-versa. See the PHOTO GALLERY.

Bottega Veneta presented his so-called relaxed meditation. Soft jackets and cotton or cashmere trousers were inspired by pyjamas, while two monochrome layers were initiated by double collars on jackets and shirts with bright coloured bow ties instead of ties. See the PHOTO GALLERY.

Italian designer team Dolce & Gabbana kicked off Milan's fashion week in relaxed style, taking inspiration from oriental kimonos to kit out men in silk evening pajamas for next summer.
Asian-style prints of dragons and butterflies decorated robes and shorts in black, white, grey, sepia and ivory for the duo's signature line. Naomi Campbell modeled one of their designs as part of the spring/summer 2009 menswear collections.
Evening jackets teamed with black trousers also sported the prints, in a collection said to reflect "the relaxed lifestyle of the modern man".
A variety of light and dark blues, and natural hues from beige to brown, were used for formal striped suits and casual wear, topped on the runway with dark-rimmed glasses.
Stefano Gabbana and Domenico Dolce tucked tight-fitting shirts — often diagonally-striped, with small bow ties or chine jersey shirts with cotton collars and cuffs — into drawstring trousers with a loose leg, or paired suits with bow and skinny ties. Jackets had small shawl lapels, single- or double-breasted.
The designers used crocodile and suede for jackets and for limited edition sneakers that also came in mixed leathers.
Models, some of whom were sent out with double-handled bags, wore python, crocodile, eel or patent leather sandals, as well as slippers in various leathers and colors.
The designers, whose show was watched by pop singer Fergie, will show off their more informal line, D&G, on June 24.

When you sit down to watch an RTE1 series called Sex and Sensibility, somehow you just know that it’s not going to be time well spent. And when actor Simon Delaney looms into vision as presenter of this history of our sexual past, you can be pretty sure that sniggers rather than seriousness will dominate proceedings.

Delaney, you may recall, had hitherto fronted a series on modern Ireland — What Are We Like? Or Bejapers Weren’t We a Hoot? or some such title — which was notable only for its smart-arsed superiority and general vacuity. And that about sums up the new series, which, according to the relevant RTE web page, “looks at the lighter side of events that caused uproar in their day”, starting with the 1960s, a decade in which apparently “loins began to stir, films grew naughty, music became raunchy and Irish knickers got in a twist”.

This would-be jokey tone was transferred from page to screen by the presenter, who promised “a journey through five decades of Irish sexual history — smut, lewdness, promiscuity, and what we did when we couldn’t get any”. And the commentators who were dragged in to offer their own tuppence worth didn’t rise above Delaney’s level of tittering banality.

Ireland in the bad old days, according to Delaney, was “an island where kissing was dangerous and nookie was fatal” and Mary O’Rourke was on hand to observe that “there was no sex — I mean, of course there was, but people didn’t go around talking about it”, while Bill O’Herlihy solemnly recalled that sex “was a very taboo subject when I was young”. Those were about as good as the insights got.

Then along came television — “a one-eyed RTE monster poised to spew sex into God-fearing Irish homes,” in Delaney’s words — and the latter part of this smirking programme (they should have called it Reeling in the Leers) was devoted to tired old recollections about Gay Byrne and The Bishop and the Nightie and whatever daylesford accommodation you’re having yourself.

Tony Soprano is shedding his wardrobe for charity.

James Gandolfini, who starred on the hit HBO series “The Sopranos,” is selling off 24 outfits, including the button-down blue shirt he wore in the opening credits and the bathrobe he donned to fetch the morning newspaper.

Proceeds from the June 25 pop culture auction at Christie’s will go to the Wounded Warrior Project, a nonprofit group that assists severely wounded soldiers in Iraq and Afghanistan. Estimates for the costumes start at $500.

Gandolfini’s wardrobe, which includes many outfits with the original production tags attached, is expected to bring up to $36,500.

Another 37 costumes worn by other lead “Sopranos” characters, including Paulie Walnuts, Christopher Moltisanti and A.J. Soprano, also are being sold, though the proceeds from those sales will not benefit the Jacksonville, Fla.-based veterans’ organization.

Stone: Is it karma?

Sharon Stone’s “karma” comment is having an instant effect on her movie-star status in China.

The 50-year-old actress suggested last week that the devastating May 12 earthquake in China could have been the result of bad karma over the government’s treatment of Tibet. That prompted the founder of one of China’s biggest cinema chains to say his company would not show her films in his theaters, according to a story in the Hollywood Reporter.

“I’m not happy about the way the Chinese are treating the Tibetans because I don’t think anyone should be unkind to anyone else,” Stone said during a Cannes Film Festival red-carpet interview with Hong Kong’s Cable Entertainment News. “And then this earthquake and all this stuff happened, and then I thought, is that karma? When you’re not nice that the bad things happen to you?”

LONDON - Naomi Campbell has been charged with assaulting two police officers during an alleged luggage rage incident at Heathrow Airport, her lawyer and prosecutors said today.The 38-year-old supermodel was charged when she reported to Heathrow police station to answer bail over the April 3 fracas, lawyer Simon Nicholls said.The Crown Prosecution Service said Ms. Campbell faced six charges - three counts of assaulting a constable, two counts of using threatening, abusive words or behavior to the cabin crew and one count of disorderly conduct.
