In a continued effort to bring you all that is important in the world of gay entertainment and ensure that you are being spoon-fed images of gorgeous, commoditized manflesh, we present the newly-minted AfterElton Briefs. Following the usual assortment of carefully-selected news items, interested readers can find a refreshing pic of a hot man in underwear after the jump. Yes, we’re serious.

And today’s Briefs are brought to you by…

This guy!

I sort of love that you’ve stopped identifying your "reward" briefs guy by name. Part of me would like to have the briefs guys identified by name just so they’re not quite so objectified, but another part of me says, "What the hell! They’re gorgeous, they got paid for their work, and I’m not going to look them up anyway."

Anyway, with or without the reward guys, I love this new column. This was a particularly great one, with Rupert looking fabulous at 49 and Andy 3 inches out of the closet and in an seminatural relationship with a Muppet.

Don’t forget that Anderson’s birthday is right around the corner: June 3. This won’t be a milestone birthday like last year’s (40), but every year brings another possibility for him to follow his former CNN colleague Thomas Roberts’ lead …

Speaking of whom, why didn’t I remember to put Thomas on my Hot 100 List? Damn! Any possibility of letting us submit a Top 25 rather than a Top 10 list next year? 10 is waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay too limiting!

AE Briefs is always a welcome read!

And, while it’s not neccesary, the guys in briefs (loose definitions not minded!) are very welcome and appreciated!  You always pick out some good ones Brian, and ‘This Guy’ is no exception!  Yum!  8)

I prefer my men with names but without briefs (or Boxers).  In bankwest lite mastercard this particular case, what’s his address? …continue reading

John Cusack and Roland Emmerich (ID4) are two guys in need of a blockbuster.
And they’re lined up to do an "end of the world" disaster pic titled 2012. Chiwitel Ejiofor may also come on board this tale of survival. Think World Without Us, I Am Legend (maybe without the digital vampires).

John Woo will make his next film, after his epic Red Cliff, a Chinese romance titled 1949, and scripted by the screenwriter of Crouching Tiger and Lust, Caution. It’s set at the end of the Chinese Civil War, when the Reds were kicking the Nationalists off to Taiwan. Dying to see Red Cliff. Love John Woo. And I’m a sucker for period pieces, unless they’re as dull as Lust, Caution. But hope, sudoku tips as we say in the reviewing game, springs you-know-what.

Offensive sought to back shield law

PHILADELPHIA — A former USA Today reporter facing fines for failing to reveal her sources for stories about the 2001 anthrax attacks said Saturday that news organizations need to go on the offensive in the fight to protect the First Amendment.

"As we all know, the news business is on a collective nervous breakdown," Toni Locy told a coalition of open-government and press groups. "It’s time to stop running. It’s time to turn and fight. If we don’t fight for the First Amendment, who will?"

Locy, who now teaches journalism at West Virginia University, spoke at the annual convention of the National Freedom of Information Coalition.

She said the country needs a shield law that would protect reporters from having to reveal their sources.

"The First Amendment needs some help," she said. "In this environment that we’re in now, it needs some help."

Last week, Niemi presented a $10,000 check to St. Patrick Catholic School.

His mother, Connie Niemi, says the money will go toward equipment, including audiovisual hardware, two large classroom maps and a concrete bench for the peace garden.

Murdoch withdraws offer for Newsday

Sunday, May 11th, 2008

Source: The Age (Original Article)

News Corp. withdrew a $US580 million ($616 million) offer for Long Island newspaper Newsday, three days after its chairman, Rupert Murdoch, said talks with owner Tribune Co. were in a ”pretty advanced stage.”

News Corp. spokeswoman Teri Everett said in an e-mail the bid had become “uneconomical,” while declining to elaborate. Cablevision Systems Corp. has offered $US650 million for Newsday, a person familiar with the bid has said. Cablevision spokesman Charlie Schueler declined to comment today.

”Of course, they’re overpaying,” said John Morton, an independent newspaper industry analyst in Silver Spring, Maryland, in a telephone interview commenting on Cablevision. ”Murdoch was overpaying. If somebody didn’t have a hometown interest, this paper would’ve sold for $US400 million to $US450 million, possibly $US500 million.”

Murdoch, who completed News Corp.’s $US5.2 billion purchase of Dow Jones & Co. in December, had planned to combine Newsday’s printing and distribution operations with his New York Post. The move would have helped News Corp. increase cash flow by $US100 million a year, Murdoch said on a May 7 conference call.

Stable of Newspapers

The 77-year-old billionaire sought to add Newsday to a stable of more than 110 newspapers that stretches from Sydney to New York to London. He began building News Corp. in 1953 after inheriting a daily newspaper with a circulation of 75,000 in Adelaide, Australia. Today, News Corp. also includes satellite television, cable and broadcast TV stations and film studios.

A News Corp. purchase of Newsday would have triggered a review by the US Federal Communications Commission, which enforces restrictions on common ownership of Newsday had a circulation of 379,613 in the six months through March, according to the Audit Bureau of Circulations. That’s 4.7% drop from a year earlier.
