Jason Schwartzman Is Bored To Death

I Heart Huckabees was a weird movie. I mean weird. But, it was the first time I saw Jason Schwartzman in a film, and I finished the movie just because I loved him to death. Since then, he’s been in a couple of movies that I love almost as much as I adore him - The Hitchiker’s Guide to the Galaxy and (my current favorite movie) The Darjeeling Limited.

So, this morning, when I saw on Yahoo News that HBO has signed Schwartzman on to be the star in it’s new series, Bored to Death, I was super excited. I’m guessing clever is going to be the best word to describe it. Now Big Love won’t be the only thing I’m watching on HBO.

The article gives this synopsis of his role: “Following a painful breakup with his girlfriend, his character decides to emulate his heroes from the novels of Raymond Chandler and Dashiell Hammett. He takes out an ad pretending to be a private detective and starts taking cases — solving some and making others worse.”

HBO has a record of doing a great job with the series that they produce. I think it’s safe to say with the combo of Schwartzman and HBO, American Express Cards this will be another success story for them.

North Miami Beach fires city manager

The North Miami Beach Council voted Tuesday night to fire City Manager Keven Klopp.

In a 5-2 vote, the council ousted Klopp, who became city manager in 2006.

Klopp said he wasn’t angry with the decision but felt that there weren’t specific reasons given for his dismissal.

After the meeting, Klopp said he was ”proud” of his work in the city. ”Whoever they find to fill the role is going to have a very big challenge on their hands,” he said after the meeting.

Council member Myron Rosner opened the meeting by saying he was disappointed with the city’s Community Redevelopment Agency and then led a motion to fire Klopp, who oversees the CRA as its administrator.

During a break in the meeting, Rosner said he was concerned about recent talks involving the CRA and land purchases. ”It smells,” he said. “No one ever had any answers to my questions.”

The firing comes on the heels of Council member John Patrick Julien announcing at the June 10 meeting that he had no confidence in the manager, though Rosner said his concerns were not the same as Julien’s. Julien never supported Klopp’s hiring, saying he wanted the city to conduct a national search.

During the June 10 meeting, Julien asked: “How can I have confidence in the manager when I hear residents complain that certain employees are not treating them with respect and nothing gets done about it? How can I have confidence in the manager when an unnecessary wedge has been placed between general employees, rank and file police officers and management?”

He also accused Klopp of ”allegiance to one” and not to all of the council members. In a later interview, Julien said he believes Klopp listens only to Mayor Raymond Marin, who voted against the firing.

Julien said after that meeting that a lot of his concerns have developed over the last six months as the city struggles to cut about $4 million out of its cheapflightstips budget.

Sweden and Russia clash, Loew banned

June 17th, 2008 by kateredman

By Mark Meadows

VIENNA, June 18 (Reuters) - Sweden and Russia meet on Wednesday to decide which team will complete the lineup for the Euro 2008 quarter-finals for which Germany coach Joachim Loew has been banished from the touchline.

If Guus Hiddink’s Russia win the Group D match in Innsbruck they will go through while Sweden and their coach Lars lagerback only need a draw to set up a meeting in Basel with Netherlands on Saturday thanks to their better goal difference.

However, Dutch coach Hiddink has given his Russia team a tough time in training and will make sure they fight for every ball. He led his native country to the World Cup semi-finals in 1998 and would love the chance of playing them in last eight.

Loew had been looking forward to Germany’s quarter-final with Portugal on Thursday but will not now be allowed to set foot on the successfully-relaid St Jakob Park pitch in Basel after being banned from the touchline for one match by UEFA.

The punishment comes after he and Austria counterpart Josef Hickersberger were sent to the stands during Germany’s 1-0 Group B win on Monday for arguing with a fourth official.

“I have to acknowledge the UEFA decision and would not like to comment on it. Naturally I’m extremely disappointed,” Loew said in a German football federation statement on its website (www.dfb.de).

DOMENECH DECISION

Turkey goalkeeper Volkan Demirel will also miss his side’s quarter-final with Croatia on Friday and a possible semi-final after receiving a two-game ban for pushing Jan Koller and being sent off in the dramatic 3-2 win over Czech Republic on Sunday.

France coach Raymond Domenech could be poised for a much lengthier absence from international football after his team’s dismal elimination from the tournament on Tuesday.

The French Football Federation (FFF) said a decision on whether Domenech remains national coach will be made on July prison break dvd 3 following their 2-0 defeat by …continue reading

Romania trains for last time as it plots way to overturn France in …

June 7th, 2008 by kateredman

Source: International Herald Tribune (Original Article)

ZURICH, Switzerland: Romania held its last practice session Sunday before it's opening European Championship match, trying to plot a way to beat France for the first time in 36 years.

The team traveled from its Swiss mountain resort base in St. Gallen for a one-hour training session at the Letzigrund Stadium. The team will hold a news conference later Sunday, the last before the two sides play Monday in the first match in the Group C.

Two-time European champion France is the clear favorite after reaching the World Cup final two years ago, but coach Raymond Domenech has been cautious about predicting certain victory.

France holds a comfortable edge in the teams' previous meetings, including a 2-1 win in their most recent match — a friendly in Paris in February 2002 — and a 1-0 victory in England in the side's last encounter in the European Championship.

Romania has not beaten the French since 1972, when it won 2-0 in Bucharest, but the team is aiming for at least a draw despite being considered the weakest in a group that also includes World Cup champion Italy and the Netherlands.

Back in an international tournament for the first time since Euro 2000, the Romanians are hungry to do well.

“We'd like to be the surprise of the tournament,” Romania striker Adrian Mutu said. “The time has come for us to show our value.”

Mutu scored 17 goals for Fiorentina this season, and will be eager to exploit lapses in a French defense which looked wobbly in a friendly against Colombia.

Some of Romania's confidence can be put down to the absence of France captain Patrick Vieira because of a thigh injury, while defenders Willy Sagnol, William Gallas and Lilian Thuram are also carrying problems and have been working hard to be ready to play in Zurich.

Plan to require voter approval for state borrowing advances

June 5th, 2008 by kateredman

Source: The Star-Ledger - NJ.com (Original Article)

Assembly lawmakers advanced a plan to require voter approval for state borrowing, despite protests from urban school advocates who contend it would derail plans to rebuild schools in the state’s poorest cities.

The Assembly Appropriations Committee released the proposed constitutional amendment today. The measure was previously approved by a Senate panel and is set for a public hearing before a Senate budget panel on Monday.

The amendment would need three-fifths approval from the Assembly and the Senate to make it onto November’s ballot for voters to decide.

New Jersey has $32 billion in debt, making it the nation’s fourth-most indebted state.

Since 1990, voters have approved $3 billion in borrowing while the state has borrowed $24 billion without voter approval. This includes borrowing for school construction, public worker pensions and to balance annual spending.

Gov. Jon S. Corzine has backed requiring voter approval for state borrowing. But the Democratic governor also promised the state Supreme Court - which has ordered the state to build new schools in some of New Jersey’s poorest communities - that he would push to get the $2.5 billion approved by lawmakers by June 30.

The new money would restart a construction program that has cost $8.6 billion but been stalled by waste and mismanagement. Key legislators such as Senate Budget Chairwoman Barbara Buono (D-Middlesex) and Sen. Raymond Lesniak (D-Union) say any new school borrowing should go before the voters.

David G. Sciarra, executive director of the Education Law Center, which represents the state’s poorest schools, said the Supreme Court has said borrowing for urban school construction doesn’t need voter approval.

“Support for the proposed amendment as written is a vote for inequality and unequal treatment of our most vulnerable and needy children,” Sciarra said.

Assembly Republicans expressed concern prison break dvd that the proposed amendment released Thursday …continue reading

French coach Raymond Domenech confirmed that Vieira hurt his left ankle in training last Friday and will not play in France’s Group C game against Romania on June 9 in Zurich.

Domenech has recalled midfielder Mathieu Flamini to the French squad as a possible replacement for Vieira. Flamini had been part of Domenech’s provisional 30-man squad but failed to make the final cut.

France has until Sunday, one day before the Romania game, to make changes to its roster in case of an injury. According to UEFA rules, teams can replace injured players until the day before their first match.

Vieira “is doubtful and that’s why we called back Mathieu [Flamini] and will make a decision on June 8,” Domenech said.
