The picture of the evil monkey man on the cover of “Evil Monkey Man,” David Yazbek’s new album, was drawn and titled by the artist’s young son. Usually that sort of kid-centric nepotism is occasion for eye-rolling, but this isn’t a case of a doting father lavishing 15 minutes of fame on his privileged spawn.”I identified with the image,” Yazbek says. “It’s childish and nightmarish and comes out of a dark place and is still funny.”That, in a nutshell, is Yazbek’s outlook on life and aesthetic in art. The native New Yorker is best known for his work in the theater; Yazbek is the Tony-nominated lyricist and composer of “Dirty Rotten Scoundrels” and “The Full Monty.” But he’s also a semi-closeted pop-rocker, writer of raucously unsettling tunes that don’t make much of a commercial dent but please Yazbek to no end. As the songwriter puts it, in signature clear-eyed prose, “I have a well-paying day job, and I can do what the hell I want to do.”Yazbek performs tomorrow at Cafe 939, where concertgoers will be treated to savage, hook-filled explications of such unlikely subjects as bloody mob hits, horrifying lab experiments, and the sad subtext of Bazooka Joe. Some of Yazbek’s songs eschew topicality for freer forms of anguish, like “Never Get Out of This,” a twangy thigh-slapper that plumbs Yazbek’s Zen Buddhist practice and delivers this promise: “You can find your way/ You can lose your heart/ You can go ahead/ You can come apart/ But the table’s set right from the start/ You’ll never get out of this.”"It’s about accepting the whole mishegoss,” says Yazbek, the son of a Jewish-Italian mother and Lebanese-Arab father. “I’d say the thread connecting these songs is loss and anger, and almost always the comic side of that.”"Evil St George Credit Cards Monkey Man” is a crafty amalgam …continue reading

“PokerStars planted the seeds and now this beautiful poker room is going to be the garden where future champions learn to play.”

By Sarah Polson

PokerStars announced today it is going live in Macau, opening up its first live poker room in the Grand Waldo Hotel and Casino in Cotai.

The poker room will official launch Friday, opening its doors to a 250-person capacity room that will offer cash games and weekly tournaments. The suggested minimum donation to enter is $2,000 HKD, which will give players a chance to compete for $150,000 HKD in prizes, including entries to the $25,000 HKD Asian Pacific Poker Tour Macau event in September. “PokerStars is committed to the development of poker in Asia. Although Macau has become a gaming powerhouse, it was only with the incredible success of the Asia Pacific Poker Tour last November that Texas Hold’em poker started growing there,” said Joe Hachem, former World Series of Poker Champion and member of Team PokerStars Pro. “PokerStars planted the seeds and now this beautiful poker room is going to be the garden where future champions learn to play. I wouldn’t be surprised if the next World Champion comes from Macau or elsewhere in China.” The charity tournament will be the first event of the Macau Poker Cup hosted in the new poker room. The Macau Poker Cup is a series of poker tournaments scheduled through the weekend, including a $1,000 HKD Deep-Stack event and a $10,000 HKD Red Dragon tournament.    Icterus bullockii

The Bullock’s oriole is a neotropical songbird. It winters in Mexico and Central America. Spring migration brings it north to breed and summer in the United States.

It occupies a range that extends from the western edge of the Great Plains to the Pacific Coast and north from Mexico to the southern Canadian border.

Male Bullock’s orioles have a bright orange body with a black cap, bib and eye streak. The wings are black with a large white wing bar. The bill is slender and pointed. Female orioles have an olive brown back and wings with a dull yellow face, throat and breast. There is a dusky line through the female oriole’s eye.

They are very vocal birds, using a series of whistles, chatters, creaks and rattles. The vocalization often has a nasal call with a harsh scolding chatter tone.

These orioles are found in the tree canopy, especially along riparian zones with cottonwoods and willows. They can be attracted to the yard with offerings of suet, grape jelly, nectar feeders built for orioles and filled with sugar water (1:4), and slices of orange staked in a tree. Meal worms are another favorite treat for attracting orioles to the yard. Blossoms of the red-hot poker plant are a favorite of the oriole.

It builds a woven basket-shaped nest that hangs from the Advertisementdrooping ends of cottonwood, willow or similar tree branches. Tie locks of horse hair, short strands of wool, cotton or other natural material to a tree or shrub branch or stuffed in a suet basket. It will pick these materials when constructing its nest.

Newly hatched and helpless young are brooded by the female and fed by both sexes. They are often a MasterCard Credit Card host to cowbird parasitism.

ROUND ROCK EXPRESS

By Danny Davis
AMERICAN-STATESMAN STAFF

Thursday, May 15, 2008

Even after picking up six losses on a recent eight-game roadtrip, the Round Rock Express thinks it has figured out one piece of the puzzle that has been its season.

“We were 2-6 (but) I thought we started to wake up offensively,” said Express manager Dave Clark. “I feel a lot better about this club because I was waiting on the club to get (its bats going).”

Round Rock (13-25) returned home after going 2-6 on the road against Colorado Springs and Salt Lake. The Express lost six straight games, bookending their trip with a 10-5 win over Colorado Springs on May 6 and a 12-5 win over Salt Lake on Tuesday.

The Express is still hitting a Pacific Coast League-low .235, but scored 46 runs on the recent roadtrip and had double-digit hit totals in four of those games.

In its past eight games, Round Rock batted .294. That’s a considerable improvement over the eight home games that preceded the roadtrip, in which the Express batted .194 with only 24 runs scored while splitting the eight games.

“The bats started going and that is the important thing because I think our pitching started going when we were slumping,” said Express third baseman Mark Saccomanno.

While Round Rock appears to be hitting better, their pitching struggled against Colorado Springs and Salt Lake, two clubs ranked in the PCL’s top five in hitting. The Express gave up at least five runs in each of the eight road games. In the 10 games before the roadtrip, the Express allowed five runs only twice.

However, the Express said the pitching problems also were tied to some fielding errors, and that the other teams weren’t necessarily hitting the ball well, just finding holes.

“It’s kind of like poker: (what seems like) the best hand doesn’t always win, and the best interest rate calculator pitch doesn’t always work,” Saccomanno said.
