Today was an interesting day, I played the 1.5k pot limit Omaha 8 or better, and made it to the dinner break and got my money in good but lost. I then split my time watching Nick Binger at the final table of the mixed limit/no limit holdem and John Phan at the 2-7 triple draw. Nick played great and with 3 players left was chip leader. He then went card dead and it seemed every hand started to go bad. He eventually got it all in with 33 vs. KK and no 3 coming. John did better winning his 2nd bracelet of this years event. He struggled and fell to 3rd in chips before coming back strong and taking it down.
I then went and played a 1k single table satellite. I played extremely tight until there were six players left, having begun with 5k in chips I had chipped up to 7k. Then a player who was playing a loose and reckless and had pushed all in several times, did it again and I had 10 10 so I went all in. Next a player acting after me with approximately the same amount of chips as me moves in as well. He has 9 9 and the other guy A K, somehow my tens hold up and I have some chips to play with. We eventually get to heads up and I start to take a decent lead. I have almost 3/4th of the chips and I give him a deal to end it. Usually I am happy to play, but I'm not against a fair deal. It has turned out to be a profitable week, and I feel like I am playing well and starting to run better.
Tomorrow I start out at the Fox TV studios at 9am for an interview then over to play the 1k re-buy. I should be on air at about 9:30 am pacific time.

Global Gambling Revenues to Exceed $155

June 21st, 2008 by macicky

Source: Pokerpages.com (Original Article)

According to an annual PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP report released Wednesday, global gambling revenue (which includes poker) is predicted to pass the $155 billion mark in 2012 after growing at an annually compounded rate of 6.5 percent per year.

Because of new casinos and casino upgrades ocurring around the world, gambling revenue is expected to rise from nearly $114 billion in 2007 the study said.

The financial consulting company identified the Asia Pacific region as the world’s fastest growing gambling region with new resorts in the Chinese enclave of Macau as well as Singapore and Thailand helping generate increases of 15.2 percent annually. Revenue from the Asia Pacific region will hit $37.2 billion in 2012 compared with $18.3 billion in 2007.

In the United States, total gambling revenue should remain well ahead of
other regions, growing at 4 percent annually from $60.3 billion in 2007 to
$73.3 billion in 2012, the report said. However, tough economic times will
lead to declining revenues in 2008 and 2009 in Nevada and Atlantic City, N.J..
Mary Lynn Palenik of PricewaterhouseCoopers said the mortgage crisis and high
gas and travel prices will lead to the decline.

"It translates into fewer U.S. travelers," Palenik said.

Palenik said international travelers won’t pick up all the slack of lagging domestic travel.

The report predicts a turnaround for Nevada starting in 2010, with revenues
expected to reach $14.8 billion in 2012 from $12.8 billion in 2007, an increase
of 2.9 percent per year. And Atlantic City was seen generating $4.74 billion
in 2012, down from $4.94 billion in 2007.

New casinos as well as licenses for online gambling and sports betting in
the region encompassing Europe, the Middle East and Africa are expected to
drive revenues in the region up 4.9 percent a year from $30.3 billion in 2007
to $38.4 billion in 2012. Gambling dog the bounty hunter dvd revenue in Canada is seen rising …continue reading

'In the Heights' wins Tony Award for best musical

NEW YORK — Sizzling with Latin music and streetwise dancing, “In the Heights” hip-hopped into the winner’s circle as best new musical in the Tony Awards

It was some enchanted evening as well for “South Pacific.”

A 59-year-old musical classic, staged in its first-ever Broadway revival, “South Pacific” won seven awards — more than any other show, new or vintage — cited in the 62nd annual Tonys.

The awards for Broadway excellence were announced from Radio City Music Hall last night during ceremonies hosted by Whoopi Goldberg and aired live over CBS.

Winning the best score prize for his Latin pop music, 28-year-old “In the Heights” songwriter Lin-Manuel Miranda rapped out his thanks and noted in part, “Look, Mister Sondheim, I wrote a hat — a Latin hat at that!” The high-energy reggaeton romance set in Washington Heights also won awards for its choreography and its spicy orchestrations

Considered the hottest competition to “In the Heights,” the coming-of-age rock saga “Passing Strange” was cited for its book.

A hilarious new production of a sexy farce about a bachelor wildly juggling three stewardess girlfriends — a Broadway flop back in 1965 — “Boeing-Boeing” flew over its nightmarish competitor, “Macbeth,” to be named best revival of a play. A Shakespearean expert on a comical holiday, Mark Rylance was named best leading actor for his depiction of an unlikely ladies’ man.

The seven awards for “South Pacific” included musical revival. Bartlett Sher was named best director of a musical for staging Rodgers & Hammerstein’s musical about love, war and racism. Making his Broadway debut, Brazilian opera baritone Paulo Szot was accorded best actor in a musical for his charismatic Emile de Becque. Early in the evening, the Lincoln Center Theater production dominated the technical categories for musicals, nabbing awards for its set, costume, lighting sudoku strategy and sound designs.

Orlando chuckles at Vegas’ expense
6 June 2008

by Liz Benston
By Our Partners at the Las Vegas Sun
LAS VEGAS, Nevada — The Orlando Convention and Visitors Bureau has come up with an advertising slogan that is drawing chuckles at Las Vegas’ expense.

The slogan on behalf of the family-friendly Florida vacation destination, appearing on a billboard near McCarran International Airport, reads, “What happens in Orlando, stays with you forever.”

The Las Vegas tourism folks won’t have much time to mount a counterattack or even discuss potential trademark infringement of its famed “What happens here, stays here” campaign. The short-lived billboard message was timed to coincide with the Travel Industry Association’s five-day annual conference that brought travel agents, convention planners and tourism officials from across the nation to the Las Vegas Convention Center this week.

Though Orlando and Las Vegas compete fiercely for convention business, they cater to fairly distinct groups of tourists, with each location running ads that would be inappropriate and even laughable in the other. (Take the double and potentially negative meaning of “stays with you forever” when applied to a whirlwind trip to Las Vegas, for example.)

“We consider ourselves friendly competitors. We like to have fun with Vegas,” Orlando Convention and Visitors Bureau spokesman Brian Martin said. Last year, Orlando advertised on mobile billboards at the association’s conference in Chicago. Las Vegas will get its chance to return the favor when the show moves to Miami next year and Orlando the following year.

THIS WEEK MARKS THE FIFTH ANNIVERSARY OF MONEYMAKER

Five years ago this week, the poker world changed. Chris Moneymaker turned an online satellite and a dream into $2,500,000 and an industry was born. A lot has changed in five years. Online poker rooms that were market leaders at the time are now out of business, or nothing more than a name “imprint” that’s part of a bigger network of poker sites. Other online poker sites-only just conceived when that 5a fell on the river, making Moneymaker a full house-have since launched, and are now market leaders. So, what can we look forward to for the tenth anniversary of Moneymaker’s win? Will the merry-go-round ride of the last five years speed up, slow down, or stop completely? Take a moment today to think about how much your life has changed over the last five years. I’m sure Chris Moneymaker is out there somewhere thinking about how much his life has changed since that fateful day.

DOES POKER NEED MORE TESTOSTERONE?

The World Series of Poker has announced that they have signed an agreement with Gamma-O Plus Pomegranate, a drink with a natural additive in it that increases the production of testosterone in the body, as well as containing pomegranate juice, which reportedly lowers the body’s chance of suffering prostate problems. The drink will be the “official testosterone booster” of the World Series of Poker. Look for more pre-flop re-raising and fewer trips to the bathroom at the Rio this summer.

Portland's Harris Set to Defend Rose Cup Title

Portland’s Harris Set to Defend Rose Cup Title

Portland, Ore. (PRWEB) May 28, 2008 — Portland’s Todd Harris is defending his Rose Cup title from last year in the 200 mph Fluge Global Adventures (FGA) Derhaag Trans-Am Corvette. Wilsonville’s Matt Crandall, in the FGA Panoz GTS, joins Harris on the team.

Both drivers are among the favorites in the 48th running of the Rose Cup Races, presented by Temp-Control Mechanical Corp. Todd Harris, a professional race driver, is owner of the Pro Drive Racing School at Portland International Raceway (PIR). Pro Drive is also the season sponsor for the Spec Racer Ford class championship that competes in the Oregon Region Sports Car Club of America (ORSCCA) road racing championship.

His primary competition will come from Portland’s Neil Shelton in the Porsche 962 Le Mans prototype car that has been confirmed as legal to compete this year by the SCCA. Perennial favorite Monte Shelton, also of Portland, will compete in his Porsche 911T.

“We were recently at a test day together at PIR and Neil is doing a great job,” Harris said. “The Porsche 962 is flying around the track. With the entry of Monte as well, there will be in two Sheltons gunning for me this year.”

“We’re a little faster than last year, but don’t know if that is because of changes we’ve made to the car, or from changes in track configuration and new asphalt. We’re at least a 1.5 seconds slower than Neil’s Porsche 962 at this stage,” Harris added.

Absent from this year’s festivities is team leader Nick Fluge, who will not be on hand to defend his Festival Trophy title from last year in his Corvette Z06. Instead, he is off this weekend to Las Vegas to compete in the first World Series of Poker event of the year. “Without Nick Fluge’s support there is simply no way I could have defended my Rose Cup crown this year. I’ll be doing my best daylesford accommodation to make him proud on race …continue reading
